- How do I find you?
I’m easy to find at 62 North Street in Ashburton, South Devon.
- Do you work online or in person?
I work with clients local to Devon in person, and with others online from wherever they are in the world.
- Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes, I do – if you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, you will be charged the full fee. If you're able to give me more notice, we can reschedule without your incurring a penalty.
- Is there parking?
There is plenty of on road parking outside the property, but also lots of competition. There is also a paying car park two or three minutes’ walk from my property.
- Do I accept visits from disabled clients?
I work with clients with a variety of disabilities, however unfortunately since my therapy space is only accessible via a flight of stairs, it is therefore unsuitable for clients with certain mobility issues.
- Do I offer concessions?
If you feel motivated to work with me and are in genuine need of a concession, please reach out detailing your circumstances.
A one-off session costs £55, when you book and pay for six sessions up front, the fee is £300, saving you £30. - How is counselling different from talking to a friend?
Counsellors have received training in listening, including putting our own thoughts to one side, and avoiding offering advice. The client is centre stage, and the service we provide is confidential; focused on helping you explore what matters in an uninterrupted, special environment. This might allow you to uncover long-buried thoughts and feelings in a safe way… and to gain clarity and confidence in making decisions and moving forward in life.
- Have I left therapy too late?
The brain is more ‘plastic’ (able to heal) than neuroscientists used to think, and there are ways to ‘hack’ our nervous and belief systems that bring lasting change… However, complex trauma might have shaped our feelings, thoughts, beliefs and nervous systems in numerous ways – we might have to be patient and persistent.
- Do I (the therapist) offer a diagnosis?
No – I’m not qualified and it’s not part of my remit. If you have been diagnosed, I’m happy to offer perspective. Some people find labels helpful; others find them stigmatising. Labels (once everyone has one) might point to there being a sickness in society at large(!) rather than in the individual. I have experience working with narcissism, co-dependency, depression, anxiety, PTSD, CPTSD and ADHD.
- What will my first session be like?
The first session is very much dependent on your preference. Going at your pace means you can tell me as much or as little about yourself as you are comfortable doing… Some people like to dive right in, others to dip a toe or two in first. If you want to set goals, or feel the need for a certain kind of emphasis, or have had good or bad experiences with other therapists in the past, you’re welcome to share. I will be guided by you- I don’t take notes during sessions, and don’ t ask for a case history, but if you feel it important for me to know certain things about you from the outset, you’re welcome to lay them out. Mostly, sessions develop organically over time as we build rapport with one another and your trust and familiarity grows.
- How many sessions will I need?
I offer short, mid, and long term therapy, depending in your requirements.
It may be that there’s lots to unpack, and we follow a natural flow together, with one line of ‘enquiry’ leading seamlessly into another.
… A stand alone session can be enough to bring clarity to some people.
You may find leaving therapy a scary experience, yet a necessary transition. It very much depends on the nature and the depth of the work we do together. We can pace ourselves and prepare for endings, harvesting learnings and letting go gracefully as a sign of a job well done.
Sometimes I might feel that I am not the best fit for you, in which case I might feel the need to refer you on to somebody with the right kind of expertise that maybe outside of my competencies. I would always do this with your best interests at heart, and discuss it with you fully first.
